Paper Instructions:
Objective of this Assignment: In this discussion forum you are considering human impact on the environment. In particular, you should think of those services that have a draw on the ecosystem.
Instructions:
- Focus on the following questions to help formulate and encourage discussion:
- Consider a bottle of ketchup. What ecosystem services go into the production of a bottle of ketchup so that it is ready for you to purchase?
- Which ecosystem service(s) is (are) most critical? Why?
- What do you think might happen when we are no longer able to produce oil and natural gas?
Part 2 Reply your peer (50~100 words)
1. Consider a ketchup bottle. What ecosystem services go into the production of a bottle of ketchup so that it is ready for you to purchase?
Ecosystem services in my opinion, that may go into the production of ketchup first might be the soil in which the tomatoes are grown so, soil formation. Next would-be water for the seeds for the tomatoes to sprout. Then once plants reach maturity the tomatoes must be harvested, put on a truck, ship, or other form of transportation to be sent to a company to process them. Furthermore, after the tomatoes are pulverised spices may be used in the ketchup recipe that come from elsewhere which also requires soil, water, certain temperatures, harvesting, and transportation as well. The tomatoes now transformed in to ketchup require plastic bottles. The plastic may be outsourced from different companies and or countries causing use of more fossil fuel to send the receptacles. Also, the company must put a label on that could be adhesive paper. Of course, to have paper trees have to be cut, processed, shipped, and sent to the manufacture which uses a lot of water and oil. Finally, the company puts the brand name on the label, ads, seals, plastic caps, and then distributes the ketchup locally, and globally for potential customers to enjoy as a food condiment.
2. Which ecosystems are the most crucial why?
The tundra is probably one of the most ecosystems for a list of reasons. The Tundra is the Earth’s “Carbon Sink” this is due to the fertile ground that contains heavy amount of carbon. The permafrost in the Tundra thaws in the summer allowing plants to grow. The soil underneath is used to track climate change because of varying layers. Furthermore, plants as well such as wild flowers, grass, and lichen only thrive in the tundra along with certain animal species. Caribou inhabitant the North American content while reindeer live in Eurasia.. Other animals in the Tundra include; doll sheep, brown bears, polar bears, and snow geese (Pot, 2017).
Forests are an important ecosystem for a number of reasons. The forest helps people breath. The trees absorb carbon dioxide that humans expel. For example, one tree produces enough oxygen for at least ten people. However, forests also provide food for humans by producing fruits, nuts, seeds, and sap while intern providing growth on the forest floor like mushrooms, barriers, and bugs for larger animals to eat. Also, forests have the ability to heal with natural medicines, reduce stress, regulate blood pressure and strengthen immune systems. Furthermore, being drawn to forests may be innate this philosophy is called biophilia where one could be surrounded by the natural world to refresh, search, and become restored while providing feeling of majesty. Nevertheless, as awareness grows that spending time in the forest stimulates overall health many people want to experience these benefits. “The Japanese practice of shinrin- yoku, commonly translated to English as “forest bathing” (McLendon, 2020, “20 They Help Us Explore and Relax,” para.1).
Oceans are an important ecosystem for example, oceans help regulate breathing. “Phytoplankton- tiny plant like organisms that live in the sea are responsible for at least 50% of oxygen on Earth” (Fleming, 2019, “1. “It Helps Us Breath, para 1.). Like the leaves of plants chlorophyll harnesses light from the sun and converts photosynthesis into carbon dioxide. The ocean regulates climate by absorbing the sun’s warmth. “More than 90% over the past 50 years has occurred in the ocean” (Fleming, 2019, “2 It Helps Regulate the Climate,” para. 1). The oceanalso is a great provider of food as fish feeds billions of people on a global scale at 16% of protein consumed worldwide. People are changing their eating habits because of environmental concerns. “A cow, for example, produces 2.8 kg of greenhouse gas per kilo of body weight and needs 10 kg of feed for every kilo it weighs (Fleming, 2019, “3. It’s an Important Source of Food,” para. 3). Finally, the ocean has a large array of biodiversity. “According to the US National Library of Medicine’s National Institute of Health, 91% of species in the ocean are still await description” (Fleming, 2019. “4. Its Biodiversity Is Incredible”, para. 1).
3.What do you think might happen when were no longer able to produce oil and natural gas?
I think if humans were no long able to produce oil or natural gas, I believe at first it would cause shock however, over time people would adjust to new ways of fueling the economy. With technology moving faster and more innovations/inventions being developed when fuel levels are depleted their will be more sustainable ways of powering the globe to provide more economic welfare for all, save the world’s ecosystems, and preserve the human race as a whole.
NOTE: I Do not know why the form is formatting my questions weird once I post it looks different!
