Hayao Miyazaki's role in the globalization of anime

Instructions

Critically examine the work of

  • an individual animator or Comics artist that is discussed in one of our course textbooks
  • a major comics or animation studio that is discussed in one of our course textbooks
  • a specific, historically significant comic, animated short, series or full-length feature.

Consider how youur topic reflects

  1. specific historical and cultural circumstances and conditions,
  2. contemporary theoretical and philosophical discourses (at the time of your topic),
  3. and/or the circumstances and conditions that effected the life and experience of individuals associated with your topic.  Remember, biographical facts and details are only relevant when and if they had a significant impact on an individual artist's professional practice as an animator, cartoonist, or comics artist.

This paper should not be written as a biography of an artist, or as a simple narrative history of a studio.  Include facts about an individual’s life only if and when those facts are directly relevant to understanding the artwork that the artist produced.

If you choose to write about an individual animator or comics artist, or a studio, your paper may consider specific examples of work that your artist/studio  produced in depth, or you may write a broader examination of the career of the artist/studio that highlights their most significant contribution(s) to their field. In addition, you may want to research the social and political conditions, the cultural environment, and/or technological circumstances that effected the studio or artist, or you may want to focus more on the theories and ideas that informed their work.
